This gives me hope! I have been looking for my ancestors marriage which took place around 1850 in Philadelphia (so the family Bible says). I haven't been able to find any record. I am considering a genealogy trip to Philadelphia this summer and maybe will be able to find something. Thanks

My parents were both living in Philadelphia but they got married in Schuylkill Co., PA. I spent quite a lot of time and treasure searching for their marriage application in the Schuylkill Co., area without success. Well guess what? They applied for their marriage license in Philadelphia went to Schuylkill Co., got married in my mother's home town, and returned to Phila.
No record of the marriage exists in Schuylkill Co., except a possible church record, because the "RETURN", the document the person preforming the marriage sends back to the county issuing the license, does not have to let his local county know.
As a last resort I contacted the Phila. Archives, gave them the year and the month I thought they were married and they found the application.
Most marriages take place in the county where the bride and her parents
live(d). It usually more convenient for the couple to apply for the license, get the blood test if required, etc., where they are living.

Just wanted to drop you a note and say that I went to the Philly Archives and found the marriage record I was looking for! For those who might also venture to the city archives be aware that they're not too organized down there, but if you spend enough time you'll be able to find what you want. They're open from 8am-5pm on weekdays.

Great job, Donna.

In providing answers, you've walked your inquiring reader through a variety of resources on and off the net.

You've done yourself proud. Just sign me...
