Great post! One-Hit Wonders … those can be frustrating even when they taste so good — you always want to get it back. I think in our family it was more like Chef Specialty Wonders. There were certain dishes my dad made that never tasted as good if someone else tried cooking them. And he never wrote anything down either

Hmm, this might be why Mom left very few written down recipes and her Mother left none at all!

Your mom’s One-Hit Wonders sound delicious! My grandmother also cooked without a recipe. I usually fail whenever I try – and I’m amazed at those who do it so well. There have been one or two times when I’ve succeeded and then I regret not keeping track of ingredients and exact measurements so I could at least try to repeat it. This was a fun post to read. Thanks for sharing.

You’ve got my mouth watering now. My absolute favorite cake is chocolate with vanilla frosting too! I like mine refrigerated.

Even after 30 some years in the kitchen I’ve never mastered the art of baking without a recipe. I cook without recipes all the time but when it comes to baking, I find that correct measurements make or break the baked item. It’s a chemistry thing, or so I’ve been told. Whatever. I don’t bake as much as I used to now that my kids are grown. They still pester me to make lots of cookies and candies when the fall and winter holidays come around though.

Now when I want a gooey dessert I stop in at the Chocolate Cafe in St Joe. Less dishes to wash that way.

Oh, one-hit wonders! I never realized this is a phenomenon in other families as well! Yup, some great things, made the first time. And BTW, that’s a yummy-looking dinner in the picture.

Great story. Husband’s grandmother cooked the same way. Everything was by feel and she just knew.

I love the term “One Hit Wonders”! I’ve had a few of those over the years myself. Also, I remember Moonlighting – great show!
